Nintendo announces DSi

Today Nintendo have announced the DSi, the newest DS model. What the “i” stands for, is unclear at the moment, but I’d say it stands for “improved”. The DSi is greatly improved over the DS Lite when it comes to features.

The DSi will come come with a larger screen, measuring in at 3.25 inches as well as being 12% thinner, mainly due to the GBA cartridge slot being removed. So while you’re not able to play GBA games on the DSi, there are plenty of other things you can do instead.

The DSi has a built in 3.2 megapixel camera, making it as good as many mobile phones, and much better than the ChottoShot for the PSP. The photos will be stored on an Sd card, thanks to it’s SD card slot. Wi-fi connectivity has also been improved, but not just for better on line play, the DSi will come with a built in web browser.

DS game downloads will also be possible on the DSi. Wii points will be re-branded to Nintendo Points, which is the currency you’ll be able to buy your downloadable DS games in. Each DS game will be sold for between 200 and 800 points.

You can start purchasing the Nintendo DSi from the 1st of November, but if you don’t live in Japan you’ll have to get it imported until it hits the rest of the world next year. The DSi will retail at £100.
