Cochrane Fire/EMS responded to a report of smoke in the basement of 6 Bow Meadows around 1 p.m. on Sept. 1.
Homeowner Cliff Chudleigh made the call after he couldn’t locate a burning plastic smell. Chudleigh turn off the power and evacuated the house with his wife and kids while firefighters searched the house for the cause of the smoke.
Cochrane Fire/EMS station officer Grant MacKinnon confirmed the source of the problem was an Xbox game console inside a cabinet.
“There was no actual flame, it looked like an electrical short. The firefighters let the smoke out and problem was solved,” he said.
“It’s no different from your TV, just unplug your electric stuff when you are not home.”
Hours later at around 3 p.m. Fire/EMS received a second report of smoke in Cochrane Heights area home across from Cochrane High School.
After some difficulty gaining access inside the home, firefighters found an oven with a turkey cooking inside. It had been smoking, but there were no flames, said MacKinnon.
The oven was dirty and needed to be cleaned, he said, explaining the source of the smoke.
The residents were not at home, having left the turkey to cook.
“I don’t recommend that you leave your cooking unattended when you go away,” said MacKinnon.
“You have potential for a grease fire that would take your whole house down.”
