December 19,2007 - With Devil May Cry 4, Capcom looks to rekindle some of the magic that was born nearly seven years ago with the original game in the franchise. In fact, in 2001 it was one of the most fluid gameplay experiences around, but in 2007 it’s a style that has been taken and replicated not only by its own sequels but by several games across multiple platforms. So with its debut on next-gen consoles, Capcom is looking at DMC4 as a fresh start for the series – at least in some ways.

DMC4 is two tales told as one, with the first half of the game showcasing Nero’s journey before rewarding players with their favorite character, Dante, in the second half. The game introduces both from the outset in a duel that serves more so as a tutorial than anything else. After getting used to Nero’s control and slamming Dante a few times with your Devil Bringer – Nero’s deadly arm – the real game begins.

The Red Queen is one of Nero’s two weapons, an imposing sword with a motorcycle handle that can be charged up through the Exceed system in order to deal more damage but will conversely lose its charge if not used within a certain amount of time. His pistol, the Blue Rose, can be charged with an attack known as the Demon Charge. In addition to providing more damage, it can be coupled with the Devil Bringer an almost poetic flow of combinations.

The Devil Bringer itself can be used to throw enemies and zip Nero around levels, but when in demon form, Nero doesn’t change appearance but rather projects a ghastly blue demon from his back. It is here that the Devil Bringer reaches its full potential as it can toss flying blades and nail multiple sword strikes with the sole purpose of demolishing any foes in your path.

As aforementioned, Dante does return in DMC4 for the majority of the second half of the game. While he may feel largely the same, he does play much better than in previous titles. Gone are the restraints put upon you when selecting your combat style, since you can now flip through them on the fly. The main styles – Trickster, Royal Guard, Swordmaster, and Gunslinger – are all back in addition to three new weapons.

The first of the new weapons is Gilgamesh, which equips Dante with metallic gauntlets and bladed boots to perform more powerful melee attacks. While in the Swordmaster style, you can power up Gilgamesh to deliver old-school Dragon Punches like Ryu from Street Fighter.

Lucifer is an interesting new weapon that equips Dante with metallic wings that project energy blades towards enemies and stay suspended, either in the air or in your foe, until you release a rose that causes the blades to explode. You can even position the blades strategically around you to create an almost impenetrable perimeter.

Lastly is Pandora’s Box, which is actually more like a briefcase that can be kicked open to stun enemies in place. But if you’re feeling more adventurous you can charge Pandora’s Box enough to transform it into one of several weapons including a chaingun, energy bow, cannon, and even a giant laser. You can also throw the box as a bladed boomerang that can harm distant enemies. By far the coolest application, however, is where you transform the box into a mobile missile platform that can be used to fire cannons in 360 degrees.

Thankfully, such power isn’t easily obtained and abused in DMC4 as Capcom has implemented a complex charging system which boosts each weapon gradually before depleting it with each use. So if you’re hoping to speed through the game by destroying enemies with Pandora’s Box, then you better hope there’s a good cheat code out there that allows you to do so.

Capcom claims the game will take at least 15 hours to complete, with enough difficulty to effectively increase the length of the game through multiple attempts. With a demo rumored to hit both PSN and Xbox Live in early 2008, we’ll have to eagerly await some more play time with Devil May Cry 4.
meh still just not that into it
