Nintendo has finally provided a real sales figure for its Virtual Console service, but strangely the company isn't sure whether it's considered a lot or low.

Following the press conference in Japan in which Nintendo [Only registered users can see links. ], Nintendo executive Shinji Hatano also briefly talked about the success of the Virtual Console service (as reported by [Only registered users can see links. ]).

Up until this point, Nintendo has been pretty tight lipped concerning actual sales figures for the library of classic games available for download. Nintendo previously stated that there have been 7.8 million downloads, but today the company actually provided a sales total: 3.5 billion yen (or about $33 million) in revenue.

What's even more interesting, however, is Nintendo's own reaction to its own sales figure. "We're currently unsure if this is a lot or low. They're not bad figures," said Hatano.

You'd think a hugely successful Japanese company like Nintendo would at least have some sort of sales target in mind for its Virtual Console and would therefore know whether $33 million is "a lot or low." That said, Nintendo is still getting accustomed to the whole online portion of the video game business. Online gaming on the Wii is still much less common than it is on Xbox 360 or PS3 and the Wii's online feature set remains minimal compared to something like Xbox Live.
