Pushing Wii Web Access in Japan

Video game giant Nintendo and telecom operator NTT's regional units said they will cooperate in Japan to promote broadband access for the former's hot-selling Wii game console.

Driving Wii's Internet connection is important for Nintendo since the company plans to launch in March a new service called [Only registered users can see links. ], which will let Wii owners purchase new game titles via the Internet.


For NTT, which aims to boost subscribers to its fiber-optic-based Web connection service in search for new long-term sources of growth, a growing user base for the Wii represents an attractive pool of potential customers.
Nintendo and NTT's two regional units, which are NTT East and NTT West, will start operating call centers jointly on Thursday to provide consultation and support for Wii's Internet connection.


They will also offer a cut-rate start-up package, which provides equipment for Web access, on-site set-up and other services for Wii users.
