X-OOM Software Brings Media Streaming To The Wii

Author Hugo Jobling Published 24th September 2007

What is it with companies these days and the obsession with letter 'X' as an indicator of high-tech, advanced software or hardware? If it isn't Microsoft's [Only registered users can see links. ], its X-OOM Software and its latest media-streaming offering, which will be bringing the aforementioned capabilities to the Wii.

While the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are already capable of streaming content (in certain formats) from media streaming devices, including PCs and NAS boxes, the Wii isn't even able to play plain-old DVDs, which has been a point of some frustration to some. X-OOM Media Centre for Wii aims to end that, enabling users to access music, video and pictures directly on their beloved console.

Format support is excellent, with such common codecs as Xvid, DivX, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, MP3 and OGG able to be played, while the package will cost you a mere £29.99, which to some may prove a sounder investment than a similarly priced game. X-OOM also claims to offer access to 'more than 1,000 TV channels and radio stations' which sounds promising, assuming the content is actually worth streaming.

Of course it should be pointed out that other solutions are available, using SD cards to transfer the content between your PC and Wii, so depending on the way you want to access your media you'll want to choose the solution that best suits you, but X-OOM at least deserves credit for giving us that choice. You an get your hands on the software from late October should your interest have been roused.
