Nintendo has offered to clean Japanese gamers' Wiis for free

In a statement, Nintendo has said that it has recieved numerous complaints from Japanese gamers who bought Smash Bros, only to find that their Wii would not play the disc or that video playback from the game was choppy. The gamers, apparently, had no such problems with other games. The reason for this, according to Nintendo, is the fact that the game is on a dual layer DVD and because of this, more sensitive to dusty laser lenses.

The solution is to clean the lens. Simple enough, right? Apparently not. Nintendo is offering to clean all affected Wiis for free if they're sent in to its Kyoto service centre along with a warranty card and copy of the game. It's all very nice of them, but the solution will leave gamers without their console.

SPOnG also has to wonder when the problem will next strike. Presumably Smash Bros won't be the last game to be released on a dual layer disc. Will Nintendo eventually have to provide a free cleaning service to all gamers who buy a game on such a disc? Furthermore, what happens when the cleaned lenses pick up fresh dirt? SPOnG suspects that, sooner or later, Nintendo will have to put a little faith in gamers to clean their own lenses...
