SCEE denies 40% failure rate on PlayStation 3 40GB model

According to Dutch website Gamed.nl, 40% of the 40GB PlayStation 3 model have been returned due to hardware defects concerning the console being unable to read discs.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has denied this, saying that the failure rate of the recently released console is comparable to that of the PlayStation 3 60GB version.

SCEE President David Reeves explained that they are proud about the quality and reliability of the PlayStation 3 and that they are very disappointed that "extremely sloppy journalism" has presented this "totally inaccurate story". He added:

Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.

So far, no exact numbers have been released regarding the 40GB model's failure rate. Because of this, we can't confirm or deny Gamer.nl's report nor SCEE's statements. Hopefully, the exact figures will be revealed soon so we can find out the truth about this issue.
