Sony: new 40GB PS3 still using 90nm chips

We recently made a report about the new 40 GB PS3 stating that it was using 65nm chips and had increased cooling powers to boot. Suffice it to say, however, that those reports seem to be erroneous. A Sony spokesperson recently told Heise Online that they were actually still using 90nm processing chips with the new PlayStation 3.

This isn't to say that the PlayStation 3 hasn't been improved, however. According to the report, the PS3 is still sporting a revised design that's supposed to lower power consumption. Instead of cranking out 180 to 200 watts, as previous PS3s were likely to do, the revised design lessens the power consumption to 120-140 watts instead, saving you both some power and a bit of cash as well.

Sony does still plan on implementing 65nm chips in the future. For now, however, it seems these 90nm chips will just have to do.
