Default Sony may launch PS3 with bigger HDD

It’s been a rumor that won’t go away but, on Tuesday, Sony actually said that it’s considering launching PS3 consoles with a larger hard disk drive capacity, in a bid to cater to the needs of hardcore gamers and other heavy users. They didn’t mention HDD size but is this the 80gb rumor being answered at last?

Sony spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said:

"For users who vigorously store games and other entertainment content in the PS3, 20-giga is probably going to be too small, and even 60-giga may not be big enough eventually"

Fukuoka also said, however, that potential changes to the PS3 are not limited to its hard disk drive capacity.

"We are not likely to change its core components and functions such as the Cell, RSX, Blu-ray drive and network capability. But outside that realm, addition and deletion is quite possible," he said.

A SCEA representative said today in a prepared statement that , "We are constantly looking at new technologies, services and configurations to meet the evolving needs of our PlayStation gamers, but at this time we have no announcement regarding any changes in our PS3 product offering in North America."

So, still a rumor but, it’s a stronger indication that an 80gb PS3 could be on it’s way!

I've seen this posted elsewhere as well, and, I have to say the general consensus is, why would anyone buy an 80GB one, when, you can just put your own HDD in?

I think, if they launched it with a bigger hard drive, a color change would be in store too.
