That's an excellent question!

HDMI means HIGH DEFINITION MULTI-MEDIA INTERFACE

And now that I have established my "super nerd" status, the answer to your question is NO.

It's a cable which is supposed to provide HD audio and picture

THE LADDER

TV ANTENNA

(for those old school TV's that had those screws in the back of 'em. You could twist the knobs and get reception)

COAXIAL

A LITTLE better than "antenna" because you can use "speaker wire" or a clothes hanger as an antenna. But it's still grabbin' signals from the 'air waves'

a COAXIAL gable is specifically channeling the signal to your TV

ANTENNA VS COAXIAL is like getting water from a body of water, as opposed to a faucet.

Next step up from COAXIAL is

AV (Audio Video) cables - sometimes referred to as RCA cables

the WHITE is for the "left channel audio"
the RED if for the "RIGHT CHANNEL" audio (giving your stereo sound, as opposed to "mono" which a coaxial would give you
and the YELLOW cord gives you VIDEO.
ADVANTAGE: it separates the AUDIO and VIDEO (which COAXIAL does not) allowing for better picture and better audio)

THEN is S-VIDEO

on the back of SOME TV's you'll find these

They replace the YELLOW cable, but still need the audio RED and WHITE cables. It provides a slightly better picture quality.
BLACK's are more black and not gray-ish. Edges are a lil sharper, less "bleed" of colours...

NEXT

COMPONENT

STILL needing the red and white cable (audio)
this cable separates the YELLOW cable because;

Every TV gives off three colours RED - BLUE - GREEN (that's it). The TV mixes these colours to generate the colour wheel and we see several colours.

the COMPONENT cable separates all colours which the YELLOW cable does not, which gives you even SHARPER of a picture (sharper than S-video) and can give you High Definition picture.

NEXT is "VGA" which is what computers use

some LCD and PLASMA have these ('cause some people wanna use their TV screens as their computers) but also, you can control the resolution much better (like you can control your PC resolution) and increase your picture quality

Fibre Optics is included with this. Fibre optics is glass...which has been stretched so fine it's like hair. Data is sent through fibre optics (in this case AUDIO) and you can have high definition/clear sound

HDMI

High definition PICTURE and SOUND in one cable!
