Katherine Hannaford writes...[Only registered users can see links. ][Only registered users can see links. ][Only registered users can see links. ][Only registered users can see links. ], this blog hasn't suddenly evolved into a PS3-obsessed website over the last few days. Oh no, that's what our squeaky-clean and shiny [Only registered users can see links. ] blog is for, which just launched yesterday. Understandably there are many different stories floating around about whether you should or shouldn't invest £425 in one of these next-gen consoles, but what's the real story? Well, I've spent the last 5 months or so attending press demonstrations and conferences getting hands-on with Sony's latest offering (even meeting the man himself, [Only registered users can see links. ]), and have created a list of pros and cons to help you make your mind up, on this, the eve of The Official European Launch. Don't worry, fanboys and girls, I've tried to be as unbiased as possible, even though I write for [Only registered users can see links. ] - it killed me doing so though, I must admit. Today, it's the list of reasons why you should refrain from dropping some serious cash on the big black shiny waffle iron, and tomorrow I'll look at reasons why you should invest. Now, It's time for me to go confess all my sins to Lord Shigeru Miyamoto now and do several Hail Peaches, sob...! Cons - why you shouldn't buy a Sony PS3 1.) Backwards compatibility - Many of the PS2 games [Only registered users can see links. ] be played on the PS3 due to 'minor' or 'noticeable' issues, with only 12 out of the 50 most popular games in Europe working properly. This means your favourites, like Resident Evil 4, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Guitar Hero I and II won't work, so you better hold off on pawning your PS2 on eBay. 2.) HDMI cables - Sony incredibly don't include HDMI cables with the console, meaning that high-def viewing you were looking forward to? Yeh, you'll have to fork out even more on a cable just to get it. But [Only registered users can see links. ] it's a Sony cable, because if you play the stingy route and get a generic branded cable, uh-oh, your PS3 warranty is void. Oops! 3.) US failure - It's safe to say that Sony have [Only registered users can see links. ] to make a splash in the US pool, with figures from February's console sales reporting the PS3 as having only sold 127,000 units. Compare that to the Wii at 335,000 or the Xbox 360, which has been available for 16 months in the US, at 228,000, and it really does appear that the general public of America has spoken - perhaps its unpopularity is deserving? 4.) Too expensive - £425 for the console, plus £24.99 for the HDMI cable, games cost £39.99 each, if you want more than the one Sixaxis wireless controller which comes with the console, that's another £39.99...In the US, the PS3 retails for $599 which really should be £304, not the £425 we're being lambasted with instead. Quite frankly, for the money you're paying, you really should be getting more, not simply a few good-looking games already available on the Xbox 360 for a whole lot less dosh. 5.) Sony unsupportive of developers - Surely if you're releasing a games console, you'll want all the games you can get for your launch line-up? Not according to Sony, who are now notorious for not supporting developers by refusing to give them 'dev kits', the units which developers use to test their works-in-progress games on. [Only registered users can see links. ] to Tech Digest, this is why many companies are shying away from releasing games on the PS3. Put simply, there's no back-scratching going on between Sony or developers, thus no joy for consumers. 6.) Lack of original games - There are 30 games available for the European launch, and many of those are either already available on the Xbox 360 (Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Call of Duty 3, Fight Night Round 3, anyone?), or are the usual sports/racing/army games churned out every year that just have another number appearing in the title - the typical EA games. In fact, many of the games are already available on the PS2, albeit are simply an earlier edition. Where's your innovation? Your creativity? Let's see some more Katamari Damacy, Okami and Killer 7-style risk-taking with the PS3, please. 7.) Format wars - Sony are obviously touting Blu-ray as being DVD's successor, however HD-DVD is looking like the potential champion in the format war. If you intended on buying a PS3 simply for the Blu-ray technology, you'd have to be pretty confident of its success. And if it flops, that means within a few years films will stop being produced on that format, meaning you're stuck with only Casino Royale et al for company. 8.) Downloadable music and films - Obviously part of the PS3 home entertainment system experience, when the [Only registered users can see links. ] online service launches fully you'll be able to purchase music tracks and films for download. But for now...nothing. Where is it, Sony? Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 Live Video Marketplace launched last year, where you can get TV shows and films for as little as $2 each.
Keep your eyes glued to your monitor, and your fingers firmly pressed on 'control' and 'F5', because tomorrow I'll be giving you eight - yes, eight, I won't scrimp - reasons why you should purchase a PS3. In the meantime, if you've read the aforementioned eight reasons and still want to go ahead and splash your £425 on one, I'll see you at the official London launch at Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street, tonight!
I agree with the too expensive part, and the backwards compatibility, and also the lack of original games. Games which are on 360, are £10 more on the PS3 - and games I dont want at all are £40 (and games that you can get on 360 for £40, are £50 on PS3)

Katherine Hannaford writes... As promised, here's the opposing story to [Only registered users can see links. ] eight reasons why you should refrain from buying a PS3 in Europe, which many readers seemed to have a *slight* problem with. Perhaps they didn't read the post correctly, in which I said I'd be doing a list of pros the next day...oops! Enough with the fanboy flamings already, jeepers, people on the internet do actually have feelings, believe it or not!
So, on with the show, let's look at the eight reasons why you can justify plonking down 425 big ones in Europe on a PS3. And let's face it...you're not going to have any trouble finding one to buy now, [Only registered users can see links. ]?
1.) PlayStation Home and LittleBigPlanet - The two virtual worlds which Sony unveiled the other week at GDC have certainly persuaded a few people to buy the console. Up to date, no other console has anything remotely similar and truly targets the Web 2.0 generation and social networking buzz quite like the PS3. While Xbox 360's Live is certainly enjoyable, albeit purely games-focused, and Nintendo Mii's avatars make an effort towards social networking, Home and LittleBigPlanet are major drawcards for the pricey console for anyone keen on Second Life-style shenanigans. 2.) Blu-ray - Always a huge point of contention across 'tinterweb, Blu-ray has many supporters, not just from television producers such as Panasonic and LG, but also from major film studios such as Columbia Pictures, MGM, Disney, Lionsgate and 20th Century Fox. At CES earlier this year, Blu-ray [Only registered users can see links. ] a premature victory, however to date more HD-DVD players have been sold than Blu-ray. Nonetheless, if you are after a Blu-ray player, definitely consider a PS3, as it's the cheapest product on the market by far. Some are even describing the PS3 as being "the world's cheapest Blu-ray player...shame it plays games". Added bonus, then? 3.) Price of games - Sony are charging £39.99 for games, the exact same price as Wii titles, but the graphics are far superior on the PS3, as anyone can admit. Xbox 360 games are ten quid more at £49.99, a huge amount for titles also available on the PS3. 4.) Home entertainment console -[Only registered users can see links. ], the PS3 is capable of so much more than playing games. Not only can you rip music to the hard-drive, watch Blu-ray movies, and surf the internet, but in the future you'll be able to download films, TV shows and music from the PlayStation Store. Who knows what they'll sell next - a Galaxy bar delivered straight to your lounge, just as you're jonesing for some pre-menstrual naughtiness?
5.) Innovative add-ons - Through EyeToy, SingStar and Buzz, the future of gaming is looking revolutionary, and it's not just because of the Wii this time. These three games/products show gaming isn't just about mashing the keypad while kickboxing a rather large-boobied elfen woman, and that Sony is capable of thinking outside the box. Hopefully they'll add more creative products and games to their repertoire, as these products prove gaming can appeal to more than teenage males. 6.) The Sony name - Sony may have been tainted of late, what with their disastrous [Only registered users can see links. ], discovery that their PS3 'footage' was actually pre-rendered videos passed off as footage, and a whole host of other[Only registered users can see links. ], but well - it's Sony. A universal brand which is as recognised in every country as the words 'Coca Cola' or 'McDonalds', and admittedly does have a good reputation when it comes to games consoles. PS2, anyone? 7.) Graphics - Throughout the whole next-gen 'wars', graphics have been waved about by both Microsoft and Sony as reasons why you should invest in their plastic - but is this a reason to get a PS3? The answer is yes. If you own a HDTV, that is. For anyone who has seen/played a PS3 at 1080p on an LCD or Plasma (preferably LCD, [Only registered users can see links. ]), you'll know what I'm talking 'bout. I'm talking 'bout a revolution, yo. 8.) PSP connectivity - Something I saw demonstrated to great effect last year at a conference, the PSP can be connected over the internet for in-game joy. One thing we saw was the possibility of downloading PS1 games to the PS3, then sent to the PSP, and played using the PlayStation Emulator. Something else which floats my boat is that you'll be able to access the multimedia content on your PS3, say your films, music tracks, and photos via your PSP using your home's WiFi. They discussed the possibility of allowing you to access this content from anywhere in the world, something everyone over the age of 20 who uses public transport and knows all too well the dangers of speakers is fearing.
And one for luck, and because I'm feeling sympathetic towards Sony due to [Only registered users can see links. ] to their official London launch last night... 9.) Blind faith - Because you're a Sony fanboy. And I mean that in the nicest of ways possible
Re: Why I think you should; spend £425 on a Sony PS3/steer clear of the Sony PS3 in E
I still havent bought my PS3 and am saving for it. The list is very helpful though for US buyers too. Well, cept it does work out cheaper here, still expensive, but cheaper, and we don't have the backwards compatibility issue.
Gives me some things to think over though before I do buy it
