Which Do You Prefer: Free or Pay For Play MMO's ?

Some people don't like paying fees to play a game and think that if you buy it at the store you should be able to play the game to the full extent without paying further fees. Others believe that premium content and better game play through expensive servers, can only be obtained through fees. Both sides are debatable.


What do you think (and you dont have to play MMO's to have an opinion on this)?

I don't think you should have to pay to play after spending all that money just to get the game. We've tried some p2p MMOs and they aren't any better. I think I'll stick to my Neverwinter Nights.

I agree, I don't think you should have to pay to play a game once you've bought it. I think its ok to have the option of 'add ons' or additional game play and if that has to be bought then so be it but, the essential gameplay should be free imo.

But, I feel that once you've bought the game, you shouldn't have to pay a monthly charge too.

One off buyin price imo is all thats needed

I play mmorpg exclusively and apart from the first one which was Diablo 2, which did not need a subscription but you had little control over your account i.e. if someone managed to hack your password there was no in game support for you.

The many games that have occupied my time since then have all had monthly subs and I have no problem with paying, mmorpg's simply cannot be compared to a simple rpg game, which has a definitive end. The games you are paying for, the only ending to the game is when you personally decide to stop playing. It’s like reading a good book and you’re on the last page but you simply want to read on, well that’s how I feel about mmorpg's.

Sure if given the choice I wouldn't pay but having tried both sides I will pick having the in game support, however unhelpful the game masters are sometimes . There is no right or wrong way of playing these complex games, you as the player set your own path, be it from abstaining totally from combat in the old SWG environment to devote all your game time to furnishing elaborate scenes in every room of your mansion to my current character in World of warcraft who is very much into combat and is a complete dps monster.

Mmorpg's have subscriptions to provide players the freedom of an ever changing game, world of warcraft has changed multiple times since I started playing 2 years ago and not always for the better but that’s the risk with these games. With the upcoming, long awaited for expansion on Jan 16th the game play is again going for a huge overhaul.

i dont like mmo's because in our contry there are a lot of connection problems so people dont get to enjoy the game very much and also i prefer LAN gaming over MMO because of the speed

I like free MMO's...well....because they're free, but I like P2P MMO's because they tend to be much better than the free ones.

This is random, but somehow I'm getting free membership on Runescape. Woot for me, even though I don't really play it anymore.

I think that for a high quality game that you should have to pay a subscription fee, it takes money to pay the employees and keep the servers working at 100% all the time.

But, if you look at Guild Wars (as an example), it's free online, they sell games by the bucket load and it's technically superb - if they can do it then other games can too.

I like those games that you can download off the internet from the official website. They have optional payments where u can spend money for in-game items (i dont do that).
