Also, a grind if this is either real time or strategy based would be significantly different than a WoW ground. I doubt this will be based on typical WoW/Everquest design paradigms. We'd more likely see things similar to CoD4's/BF2 mechanics.
Infantry? You get ranks/weapons/abilities by killing people in battle, and in particular ways.
Commander? You get ranks/weapons/abilities by ordering tactical strikes at the appropriate times, as well as points for an overall win.
Spy? You get ranks/weapons/abilities by hacking enemy computers, exposing their tactical information to your squad/platoon commander.
Jet fighter? Occurs by supporting ground troops or winning dog fights.
That's my take on what they'd do, assuming the game is what I think it'd be.
I'd be into a persistent war world like that. But, that would be very tough to balance.
