The folks over at [Only registered users can see links. ] are taking a look at just how you can bring the cost of a gaming PC down under $800. Sure, that doesn’t include a monitor, keyboard, or mouse; but if you’re serious enough to buy a gaming PC you probably already have those peripherals anyway. If not, you can grab a decent widescreen and a keyboard and mouse for $250 or so. (Note: The case pictured here is not the case the article mentions)
This isn’t some stripped down machine, either. With a Core 2 Duo, GeForce 9600, and 2GB of RAM, this dog can definitely hunt. Sure, it won’t play Crysis, but most computers that haven’t traveled back in time from the year 2014 won’t either. You can check out the entire article, along with ExtremeTech’s explanation for the hardware they chose for each slot, right [Only registered users can see links. ].

I find it amazing how cheap it is now to make a fairly good gaming PC. Even over here in Australia where everything is much more expensive than in the US, I was able to build a gaming PC for one of my friends for $1500, including a 24" LCD monitor, which was the most expensive thing - $523.

You just need to shop around and get the best prices. Of course, having someone who knows current hardware is a bonus too.

... Built my computer from scratch, it has a 2.8ghz P4 (got for free), 1GB DDR RAM (got 512 for free, other 512 for $40), 128MB Videocard ($55), System Case (free), 2x CD/DVD RW+ (free), 17" LCD (free but had a blown fuse, 50cents to fix), Mouse & Gaming Keyboard (both free). xPlod speakers (also free), Operating System Modified Windows XP Pro (Downloaded). 80gb +20gb HDD (free).

Overall: $95.50 NZD

Picked up most of the freebies from the "free bin" in computer stores, everything else from trade-me (online auctions). Operating System is Windows Royale which is a streamlined version of XP Pro, runs super fast and has additional themes and such.

Wish I had a case like the above, mine is just a old tin&steel square thing...
