Gimp is easy and userfriendly, you just need to get used to the buttons as their different to other programs. As it is open source, you can build it up to be quite useful (it starts useful but you get to add the "quite"), I don't even have it installed anymore.

Photoshop (any version) Functions Functions Functions! I would reccomend going for CS3 or CS4 (when its released) as the newer ones are nicer to use and most things come under obvious menus. You can do nearly anything with photoshop from making a simple signature (their not that simple really...) to making a supermodel a man (its true!)

Jasc Paintshop PRO personally I think this program si achildish, a baby in comparison to either Gimp or Photoshop, the features are up there but accessibility is kinda low. Good if your going to create images with minimal effects. Does have some nice photo eidting tools though.

Just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps.
I never tried paint shop pro.
oh and those videos for photoshop are pretty cool!

I use photoshop or fireworks if I need to. I have illustrator too and I have used that a lot in the past.

I used to have Paint Shop Pro and thought it was the business, but that's because I'd previously been using MS Paint 0_0

When I got Photoshop I never looked back.

Painter is pretty good too depending on what you are doing. Not good for graphics though.

Painter is more for digitally painting. I am kinda interested in getting Illustrator or Flash.

Yeah that's what I tend to use it for, realistic styled drawings that simulates real media.

Photoshop all the way!! I've been working in photoshop for what almost 3 years and I've only just got the hang of it all because of Uni and all that.

I've found photoshop easier to use than GIMP.
