Videogames Sales Soar the Wii still dominates

Maybe it’s an escape from the reality of these tumultuous times, maybe it’s a result of the higher unemployment rate freeing up schedules or perhaps it’s just because people like playing games - whatever the case, October was a huge month for the videogame industry. Two of the big three consoles saw healthy sales increases and industry sales as a whole climbed a remarkable 18%. In terms of consoles, any enthusiast could probably tell you how each of the big three fared. We already know that the Wii is on [Only registered users can see links. ] but that doesn’t keep us from being impressed by a month to month increase of almost 17% to 803,210 consoles sold in October.


Microsoft’s Xbox 360 also saw a nice bump from 347,200 units solid in September to 371,000 in October. On the flip side of the coin, literally, Sony’s PlayStation 3 dropped over 18% to 190,000 units sold. It wasn’t all bad news for Sony however; the company released its highly anticipated Little Big Planet game near the end of October and still managed to snag the number eight spot among top sellers with a remarkable 215,000 units sold in just five days. Microsoft’s Fable II game topped the list with 790,000 copies sold. All in all, things are looking extremely bring for the industry as a whole. Despite the downward trend being experienced by industries across the globe, videogame industry sales look like they will top $22 billion in 2008.
